Clybourne Park
Ensemble Theatre · march 2014
Clybourne Park is a wickedly funny, fiercely provocative play about race relations, real estate and the volatility of each. Written in 2010 by Bruce Norris the play is an imaginative spin-off to Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun. It portrays fictional events set during and after the Hansberry play, and is loosely based on historical events that took place in the city of Chicago.
The first act is set in 1959 where a fictional suburban house in Clybourne Park has just been sold. Act Two fast-forwards to the early 2000s when the same house is about to be levelled and rebuilt. In both eras, we watch gender and racial politics play out in the arena of the living room of the same family home.
Outrageously funny, the play Clybourne Park has won – the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, the 2011 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2010 Evening Standard Award.
This production, produced by Ensemble Theatre in 2014 was directed by Tanya Goldberg and starred wonderful actors including Paula Arundell, Thomas Campbell and Briallen Clarke.
“Kudos to set and costume designer Tobhiyah Stone Feller, whose set for the house can be completely transformed for the second half so we can see how much this suburb has been left to its own devices, out of fear and neglect.”
